Sermon Questions

March 1, 2026

Richard White, Pastor

John 19:28-29

The Depths of Thirst

  1. Describe a time when you were most physically thirsty?
  2. Thirst of soul is different from physical thirst. What is the thirst of soul?
  3. Why was Jesus experiencing thirst of soul? (Psalm 42:2; Ps 63:1; Ps 22:15; Luke 16:19-24).
  4. Read God’s indictment against his people in Jeremiah 2:13.  What cisterns have you attempted to dig, collecting “water” from this world in an attempt to satisfy your soul’s thirst? Can you name some of those waters you have drunk from in an attempt to satisfy your soul’s thirst (outside of God)?
  5. Have you ever wanted something so badly, thinking that if you only had it you’d be forever satisfied? What happened when you got it?    Why can’t even the good things of this life become the life-giving water our souls truly crave, why only God?
  6. The sermon highlighted three types of thirst: Thirst of the Empty Soul, Thirst of the Dry Soul, and Thirst of the Satisfied Soul.  Which of these thirsts have you experienced? Which are you currently experiencing?
  7. Why might Christians experience the thirst of the dry soul? (what dries up our souls?)
  8. Why is the thirst of the satisfied soul a joyful ache in the Christian’s life?
  9. Read and then pray in light of the following Scriptures: Psalm 107:9; John 4:14; John 7:38; Psalm 143:6-8.
